The Pink Palace Mansion was originally built as the dream home of wealthy entrepreneur and founder of Piggly Wiggly grocery stores, Clarence Saunders. However, in an epic legal battle with the New York Stock Exchange over control of his Piggly Wiggly stock, Saunders lost his fortune and the unfinished mansion. Saunders gifted the Pink Palace to the city of Memphis to be used as a history museum, which opened in 1930.
Originally, Saunders had named the mansion Cla-Le-Clare combining the names of his children, Clay, Lee and Clare. However, Memphians had another idea! They nicknamed it “The Pink Palace” as soon at the pink marble was added.
The original painting is very dear to Georgia and Jane. When their son/grandson Trey was engaged to be married, and the Pink Palace was selected as the venue, his bride-to-be requested a painting of the mansion to be used on their wedding invitations. What an honor! Trey and Kaitlyn Stafford are now happily married and the proud owners of the meaningful piece.
